Azerbaijan can change its name for Northern AzerbaijanBaku, Fineko/abc.az. Today, the Azerbaijani parliamentarians have put forward the idea of renaming the country into Northern Azerbaijan.
Representing ruling party Yeni Azerbaijan Partiyasi (YAP) MP Siyavush Novruzov says that the question has been often raised and is still actual.
"Such practice has been used throughout the world. For example, there are North and South Korea. I think we should introduce it as well. I think this is a very important issue," Novruzov said.
After the Russian-Persian wars in the first third of the XIX century Great (historical) Azerbaijan was divided between the Russian and Persian empires. On the territory of modern Azerbaijan it was created several provinces, and the country received the name "Azerbaijan" in 1918.
Today Iran has several provinces with the word "Azerbaijan" in the title, including the province of "Northern Azerbaijan". At the same time the movement whose goal is to prove that the present Republic of Azerbaijan is nothing but the old Iranian province of Aran has increased in Iran.
